Course Description

Week 1: Introduction to Simulation and Rulebased Simulation with RiverWare (March 9-13, 2009)
This 5-day course will present an overview of the RiverWare river and reservoir modeling software and will focus on building and running models with pure simulation and rulebased simulation. During this week you will learn to:
Build models by creating objects, linking them and populating them with data;
Run and analyze simulations;
Import and export data using data management interface utilities;
Configure the simulation control table and use it to manage runs;
Use the Multiple Run Manager to automate multiple runs;
Use the Scenario Manager to make alternate runs and compare results;
View and export output to graphs, spreadsheets, databases and other destinations;
Develop rules in RiverWare Policy Lanaguage (RPL) that reflects a river system's operational policies; and
Run and analyze rulebased simulation runs.
This class covers the material provided in the two 3-day classes. You can register for either of these classes individually:
  March 9-11, Introduction to Simulation Modeling Training
  March 11-13, Rulebased Simulation Modeling Training
Week 2: RiverWare and Associated DSS Tools: Advanced Topics (March 16-20, 2009)
During this week, we will present several topics regarding uses of RiverWare and other DSS tools for planning and scheduling operations on river systems. Following is a list of possible topics:
Multi-objective optimization with RiverWare (includes value of hydropower);
Modeling water accounting and water rights in RiverWare;
Using the Iterative Multiple Run Manager for Yield Studies;
Comparing alternatives with risk and uncertainty. This includes:
  Generating stochastic hydrology traces with non-parametric toolkit,
  Using Multiple Run Management with stochastic hydrology,
  Graphical Policy Analysis Tool for analyzing stochastic runs;
Corps of Engineers Flood Control Methods in RiverWare;
Other topics as requested; and
Extended (2-3 days) work on case studies that students bring or send in advance.
CADSWES will determine the topics to be covered based on interest and time.
